Ascension is such a happy term. A happy name for a Dark Law Systems corporation that controls 80% of the best hospitals on the planet, provides 75% of the world's public and commercial transit including air travel, and supplies commercial and government buildings for the entire planet at a rate of 60% of Terran's skyscrapers, office parks and manufacturing facilities due their ability to build in Beijing and jump gate the entire building to the final site–operational and fully installed.

There's no ulterior motive because that concept doesn't exist in Terran's three law systems. But, Lee has traveled to the Earth Dimension, where the concept of an ulterior motive and blurring the lines does exist. Even though Lee didn't really have any historic control of Ascension until his parents retired and turned over all control to their son; simultaneously firing all the board and allowing Lee the opportunity to hire his own staff to replace the board.
